EDENTON – The Town of Edenton is excited to play host to an underwater archaeology Field School from East Carolina University’s Program in Maritime Studies!
This team will be on-site here in Edenton on the following dates:
May 17 - 21
May 24 - 28
Vessels belonging to the team will be docked at the town harbor during this time. While here, the team will be diving to an underwater wreck, of the Revolutionary War-era, at John’s Island, and have expressed interest in other wrecks, such as one in Queen Anne's Creek. These other wrecks are also suspected to be tied to the Revolutionary War and are estimated to have not been visited since at least the 1990s.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the history of Edenton while building a relationship with the folks down at East Carolina University,” said Town Manager Corey Gooden. “We will be pleased to have them here in Edenton for a couple of weeks, and hope to learn much more about our own maritime history as a result.”
The archaeology team plans to hold a Public Day on Sunday, May 19 down at the waterfront. Timing and additional details will be made available when they are finalized. This event would allow the public to come out and learn more about what the team is researching, as well as ask questions.
